Too Old For Stem Cell Therapy?

If you or an older loved one suffers from a painful osteoarthritis condition and you’ve heard how stem cell therapy is being used to successfully treat a range of joint problems, you might be wondering if you are too old for treatment.

Not very long ago, the answer would have been “yes,” when age could affect the regeneration of stem cells derived from the bone marrow. But now that doctors are harvesting stem cells from adipose fat tissue, not the bone marrow, older patients are stronger candidates for the breakthrough treatment.

Adipose Stem Cell Therapy

This non-invasive procedure removes a small amount of adipose “fat” tissue from the body. Adipose tissue – commonly known as “fat” – is the human body’s richest source of stem cells. Adult stem cells are found in several areas of the body, but Adipose-derived stem cells have, by far, the most healing potential and are capable of morphing into various cell types that repair the body.

During the simple and painless procedure at New Jersey Pain Care Specialists, a small sample of Adipose fat tissue is removed from your “love handles” or abdomen area while you’re under a local anesthetic. After the sample is sent to our in-office lab where it is purified and assessed for quality, literally tens of millions of the patient’s own newly-activated stem and regenerative cells are administered back into the body and immediately begin working to repair and regenerate damaged tissues . No stems cells are taken from the bone marrow, making Adipose Stem Cell Therapy easier, faster, safer, and less costly.

What Are The Advantages of Adipose Stem Cell Therapy?

  • Easier: Adipose-derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells are easier to harvest than bone marrow and can be obtained in much larger quantities through a simple procedure
  • Faster: The entire process is completed in-office on the same day. No culturing or manipulation of the cells is needed, as opposed to certain bone marrow therapy, which can take days or weeks before enough cells are available to put back in your body
  • Safer: Patients receive their own cells, so there is a low risk of rejection or disease transmission; everything is done in-house under a physician’s control
  • Non-controversial: Using your own adult stem cells rather than embryonic stem cells poses no ethical or moral issues

After the Procedure

Stem cell therapy helps avoid the pain, disability, down time, and risk associated with major surgery. There is minimal recovery from a stem cell treatment, usually accompanied by soreness in the area that was treated, and there is also a risk of bruising. Afterwards, the patient is encouraged to use the joint normally, and follow up treatments of PRP are given in monthly intervals to continue to enable the stem cells to do their repair work. Since stem cell treatment is very safe, it can be repeated in the joint if necessary to obtain optimal results.

Regardless of age, the best way to determine whether Adipose Stem Cell Therapy is right for you is to consult with an experienced physician at New Jersey Pain Care Specialists. Give us a call at 732-720-0247.

At the present time, Stem Cell Therapy is not covered by medical insurance.
