Stem Cell Injection Helps Stroke Patient Recover Use Of Her Arm

Recently, I blogged about an article from the Miami Herald that featured the amazing benefits of stem cell therapy: how it was used to repair the damaged heart muscle of a 42-year-old man who barely survived what cardiologists call a “widow maker” heart attack. Few expected him to recover as well as he did without a heart transplant.

I wrote that I believed it was relevant news because it complemented the remarkable results that are being achieved at New Jersey Pain Care Specialists using stem cell therapy to restore and repair the damage from conditions such as degenerative disc disease, desiccated discs, spinal stenosis, facet arthrosis, sacroiliac joint syndrome, osteoarthritis of any joint, and sports or overuse injuries.

Big breakthrough in the UK

In this latest blog I’m sharing another remarkable story that showcases the potential for stem cell therapy in treating a wider range of human conditions: A 66-year-old woman who had suffered a stroke one year ago became the first in England to undergo a stem cell brain injection to help recover the movement and functional use of her paralyzed arm.

Each year, around 110,000 people in England suffer a stroke and it is the third largest cause of death behind heart disease and cancer. In the U.S., some 795,000 Americans suffer a new or recurrent stroke each year, killing someone about once every four minutes. Some 7 million American adults are estimated to be living with the aftereffects of stroke, which can include difficulty speaking, weakness, paralysis, and trouble with thinking and memory. The total number of people around the world disabled by stroke is quite staggering.

And that’s why this new news is so important

The stem cell therapy used in England was first tried in 2010 at Glasgow’s Southern General Hospital for an early-stage study, which involved a total of 11 patients aged in their 60s, 70s and 80s. A hospital spokesman in England noted that the study in Scotland showed the therapy to be safe, so what was needed next was to quantify how much benefit could be derived from it.

He added: “While we have made great strides in this country in treating the onset of a stroke, there is little that can currently be done to improve the lives of so many survivors who are left permanently disabled as a result of stroke – but this project could change that.”

A second patient, a 72-year-old woman, has now received the injection at Southampton General Hospital and the study is under way at 11 other units in the UK.

On this side of the Atlantic…

Preliminary testing of stem cell therapy to help stroke victims is also underway in North America. Earlier this year, headlines were made by National Hockey League legend Gordie Howe (who passed away in June at age 88) and former NFL quarterback John Brodie, who both reported major recoveries after undergoing stem cell therapy for their stroke damage in Mexico.

The doctors at New Jersey Pain Care Specialists also want you to know that stem cell therapy is currently available to restore and repair an array of injuries and conditions.

At the present time, Stem Cell Therapy is not covered by medical insurance.
